Real Madrid on Monday confirmed the midfielder Luka Modric’s contract extension which will keep him at the club till 2024.

The Croatian arrived at the Spanish capital in 2012 from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of €35m.

“Real Madrid C. F. and Luka Modrić have agreed to extend the player's contract, which sees him contracted to the club until 30 June 2024,” the club said in an official statement.

“Luka Modrić joined Real Madrid in 2012. During his eleven seasons in our jersey he's made 488 appearances and won 23 trophies: 5 Champions League, 5 Club World Cups, 4 European Super Cups, 3 LaLiga titles, 2 Copa del Rey and 4 Spanish Super Cups.

“Modrić has won the ultimate individual awards during his career as a Real Madrid player, including the 2018 Ballon d'Or, the 2018 FIFA The Best Player of the Year Award, the 2017/18 UEFA Player of the Year Award, the 2017 Club World Cup Golden Ball, and this season he was part of the FIFA/FIFPro World XI for the sixth time in his career.

“He also won the Golden Ball at the World Cup in Russia and the Bronze Ball at the World Cup in Qatar.”

Modric has been one of the most prominent figures at the club ever since his arrival. He became an undisputed starter in his second season with Los Blancos in 2013/14.

The Croatian footballer assisted what is considered the most important goal of the last decade for Real Madrid when Sergio Ramos scored a header in the additional minutes to equalise against Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) final in Lisbon in 2014.

He has since then contributed to many trophies including the 2017 UCL final victory against Juventus where he assisted Madrid’s third goal in Cardiff.

Earlier, Madrid announced the contract renewals of Dani Ceballos, Toni Kroos and Nacho Fernandez. Ceballos was offered a four-year deal while the German and the Spaniard only extended for a year.

Real Madrid have already signed four players in the summer transfer window. Fran Garcia, Brahim Diaz, Jude Bellingham and Joselu were the first four signings done by Los Blancos.

Garcia was bought from Rayo Vallecano for €3m, Brahim returned from his three-year loan spell at AC Milan while Bellingham was bought for a record fee of €103m from the German club Borussia Dortmund and Joselu was brought on loan from Espanyol on a one-year deal.
